Supt. Reykdal calls for BNR reforms

Board needs more transparency, diversity, inclusion

In a February letter to Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz and his fellow Board of Natural Resources members, Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal calls for significantly more time for the Board to evaluate proposed timber sales and for the public to comment on them, as well as for changes in the Board’s composition to reflect “All the People,” as a recent State Supreme Court ruling described the beneficiaries of state lands, rather than the current narrow group of government agencies who profit from the timber sales. In recent years, Reykdal has been increasingly critical of DNR policies and procedures and has spoken of the need for the agency to better address the climate and biodiversity crises.
