Deadlines in June and July for federal forest preservation comments

Open comment periods for federal rules are a rare opportunity for public input in protecting mature and old- growth forests. More info: www.climate-forests.org/take-action 

By June 20: DOI rulemaking: How might the BLM use this rule to foster ecosystem resilience of old and mature forests on BLM lands? It’s up to us to ensure that a new rule includes the protection of mature and old-growth forests on federal lands as a cornerstone of U.S. climate policy. Make a comment here.

By July 20: USDA Advanced Notice of Public Rulemaking to Build Climate Resilience (ANPRM) The U.S. Department of Agriculture/ Forest Service is inviting public feedback on the question: Given that climate change and related stressors are resulting in increasing impacts with rapid and variable rates of change on national forests and grasslands, how should the Forest Service adapt current policies to protect, conserve, and manage the national forests and grasslands for climate resilience? Make a comment here.

Mount Rainier National Park has proposed requiring reservations for vehicles, but the proposal doesn’t plan to reduce vehicle use. Adding a robust shuttle system could allow connections to transit and reduce climate impacts of visitation. Learn more from Washington Trails Association.

Putting solar in “wasted” spaces

In France, a new law will require all parking lots with more than 80 spaces cover at least half the area in solar canopies. This could add up to 8 percent of the country’s current power capacity to the grid, the equivalent of 10 nuclear power plants. In the US, the Ray Project hopes to turn wasted highway space into solar arrays.
