As part of the Week of Action for PNW Forests and Climate happening June 24-July 2, the Washington State Lands Working Group releases an open letter from more than 25 organizations to Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz, calling on her to:

  • Publicly commit to bring forward a new policy and plan for the protection of mature forests by the year end 2023. This policy should be grounded in the scientific literature relevant to western Washington.
  • Adopt a moratorium of all timber sales that contain mature forest until the Department of Natural Resources and the Board of Natural Resources can formulate the new policy.
  • Publicly clarify that the 2,000 acres to be conserved with Climate Commitment Act funding is in addition to the DNR’s 10,000-acre “carbon project”.
