What is Initiative 2117?
According to a ballot summary provided by the Washington state legislature Initiative 2117, which will be on the ballot in November, would prohibit state agencies from imposing any type of carbon tax credit trading, including “cap and trade” or “cap and tax” programs, regardless of whether the resulting increased costs are imposed on fuel recipients or fuel suppliers.
It would repeal sections of the 2021 Washington Climate Commitment Act* as amended, including repealing the creation and modification of a “cap and invest” program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by specific entities.
*The Climate Commitment Act is one of a suite of laws intended to drive down greenhouse gas emissions in Washington to 45% below 1990 levels by 2030, 70% by 2040, and 95% by 2050.
I-2117 is a purposely misleading initiative opposed by firefighters, small business owners, doctors, Tribal Nations and more because it threatens our health and would make traffic worse.
I-2117 would end protections for our air, water, forests, and farmland.
I-2117 would devastate our transportation and infrastructure programs, putting major road and bridge projects at risk of delay, or even cancellation.
I-2117 removes funding for one-quarter of each ferry as the state works to restore a ferry system already in crisis.
