Ed Chadd, Olympic Climate Action forests chair, will speak on “Our Forests, Our Climate, and Our Communities: Weaving a Healthier Web”
In the quest for a climate-safe world, one essential component is to foster nature’s own critical role in regulating climate and other earth systems. A huge amount of carbon is stored in soils and forests, and the forests of the Pacific Northwest are champions in this regard. But current management, even of state-owned forests, emits more carbon than it stores and causes other problems in our environment. The claim is made that conventional clearcut harvesting is essential to world and rural economies, but recent initiatives posit environmental protection as an opportunity to recreate our rural communities and economies in a healthier way. This talk will focus on these issues and their solutions, focusing at the state level and offering opportunities for citizen involvement.
Ed is a retired environmental scientist and educator who for 20 years coordinated the Streamkeepers community-science program on the Olympic Peninsula. Prior to that, he was a high-school English and social studies teacher, Peace Corps volunteer, and Outward Bound instructor with at-risk youth. Community engagement goes back in his family to the anti-Czarist movement of the early 1900s.
