Letter to Gov. Inslee from WA Tribes

May 24, 2021

Governor Jay Inslee
Office of the Governor
PO Box 40002
Olympia, WA 98504-0002

Dear Governor Inslee,

CC: Honorable Members of the Washington State Legislature

We, the undersigned, as proud members of the coalition who passed the Climate Commitment Act, oppose the veto of Tribal consultation commitments and protections for Tribal sacred sites and burial grounds in the Climate Commitment Act. These policies were negotiated in detail with House, Senate, and Governor’s Office representatives in detail and passed through both chambers of the State Legislature without objection.

These key human rights protections, which include the ability of Tribes to protect their sacred sites and burial from desecration from projects funded by carbon revenue, were fundamental and indispensable reasons why a large coalition of Tribal Nations provided pivotal support for the passage of this legislation.

We, the undersigned, call on Governor Inslee and the Washington State Legislature to seek a solution that will uphold the original commitment made to Tribal Nations and rectify this unacceptable decision.

Sincerely,
